# Role of NFTs

Our NFTs are playable characters in the game. Each type of NFT plays an important role in accessing the play-to-earn rewards in Cosmic Champs. Cosmic Champs will always be free-to-play so NFTs are not necessary to play or earn. A player who has no NFTs will still earn our governance token, Cosmic Gold (COSG), by winning battles but they will earn at a lower rate than someone who has Champ NFTs in their wallet. Planet NFTs will earn their owners COSG every time a battle takes place on their planet. Ship NFTs may increase a player's play-to-earn rate and allows them to mine Steel Chips which are exchanged for Blueprint NFTs which are then used to mint new Ship NFTs.
